Dinwiddie Circuit Court Expands Access to Historical Documents Online

Posted on May 16, 2014 at 9:29 AM by Barrett Chappell

The first project was the microfilm conversion of the Land Tax Books from 1782 to 1875. This project can be of particular importance because the Deeds Books do not start until 1833 from a courthouse fire. If you are intersted in looking for land owners prior to 1833 this would be the only documents available.  These documents can be viewed here, http://www.dinwiddieva.us/index.aspx?nid=978.

The second project completed was the electronic conversion of the Board of Supervisor Books.  The books are indexed by meeting and also by Board Book number. The pdfs documents are OCR searchable. You can type a keyword in the pdf and view all instances where the word appears.  The books on the website are Board Books 1 to 17. These documents can be viewed here, http://www.dinwiddieva.us/index.aspx?nid=992.

We are also in the final stages on completing the conservation and electronic conversion of other historical documents in our office that the Library of Virginia grants do not cover. We will be posting these documents online by the end of the year.
