Instructions for New and Renewal Concealed Handgun Permits

  1. Fill out this State Police Form (Click here for Application)
  1. Take it to the Dinwiddie Sheriff’s Department with a $50 check.  They will take your fingerprints and run a background check as necessary.  The address to the Sheriff’s Department is:  14230 Sycamore Drive; Dinwiddie, VA 23841
  1. The Sheriff will then forward the application to the Dinwiddie’s Circuit Court Clerk’s Office.
  2. Once it is received we will present it to the Judge and he will sign an order approving or denying the permit. 
    1. If your permit is approved the Clerk’s Office will prepare your permit
    2. If your permit is denied you are entitled to a ore tenus hearing within 21 days
  1. The Clerk’s Office will call to notify you when your permit is ready for you to pick up
    1. It should take about 45 days upon receipt from the Sheriff’s Department
    2. If it has been more than 45 days please call the Clerk’s Office and we will inform you of your permit status
    3. There is not a Judge here everyday or week so actual times will vary
