The Mission of the Dinwiddie Department of Social Services is to work collaboratively with other community agencies in order to promote self-reliance and protection to citizens of our community. Working in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Social Services, our function is to provide benefits and services to the citizens of Dinwiddie County.
The Cooling Assistance Program is designed to assist households with cooling equipment and/or payment of electric bills to operate cooling equipment. You may be eligible for assistance if someone is 60 years old or over, under six years of age, or disabled, and the household meets income requirements. The program runs from June 15th until August 16th. Please call 469-4524 with any questions.
Commodity Distribution
For Dinwiddie County residents only. Provided by Dinwiddie Department of Social Services through the Central Virginia Food Bank. Each month non-perishable food items (for example: apple sauce, beans, corn, green beans, peaches, rice, spaghetti sauce, etc.) are distributed based on availability. PLEASE BRING GROCERY BAGS TO HELP with distribution. Volunteers are needed to help with this project and others.

Everyone must provide proof of identity and residency the day of the distribution. If you are currently a SNAP (Food Stamps) , Medicaid, SSI or TANF recipient you will be required to file an application and declare your household’s income to be eligible for the commodities. EVERYONE will file an application and self declare their household’s income to determine eligibility based on income limits issued by USDA.
Applications can ONLY be filed the day of the distribution. Workers will be there to assist applicants.
