County Attorney

The County Attorney’s Office provides the Board of Supervisors, the county administrator, and county staff with legal counsel.

The County Attorney’s Office also represents the Planning Commission, Industrial Development Authority, Board of Zoning Appeals, and assists constitutional officers to the extent requested by such boards and officers where no conflict exists with the primary representation of the Board of Supervisors.

The County Attorney’s Office routinely provides legal opinions on the day to day operations of county government and drafts and reviews county ordinances, board resolutions, contracts, deeds, bond documents, and policies.  The County Attorney's Office provides legal advice to officials pertaining to a wide range of local government issues, including, but not limited to, economic development, zoning and County Code compliance, public procurement and contract law, the Virginia State and Local Conflict of Interests Act, the Virginia Freedom of Information Act, taxation, employment law, real estate law, and constitutional law.

Biographical Information

Tyler Southall grew up in Dinwiddie County and is a graduate of Rohoic Elementary School, Dinwiddie Middle School and the Appomattox Regional Governor's School.  He received a B.A. and J.D. from the University of Virginia, where he was an Echols Scholar and later articles editor of the Virginia Tax Review.  Following law school, Tyler practiced corporate and securities law at the Washington D.C. office of Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson, until accepting the position of Dinwiddie County Attorney in September 2011.

Tyler resides with his wife and family in Dinwiddie County, near Sutherland.
