2024 Medals of Honor
Dawn M. Titmus Spirit of Excellence Award
The Dawn M. Titmus Spirit of Excellence Award is bestowed upon any Dinwiddie Fire and EMS member who has distinguished themselves by their unselfish commitment to the department's success. One who has gone above and beyond the call of service and duty for the betterment of Dinwiddie Fire and EMS. The recipient of this award will have performed a significant action or service that surpasses the requirements of their job description, is voluntary, unmotivated by compensation, and is within or outside scheduled work hours.
We found it only appropriate that the person for which the award was named, and whose career was worthy of defining the criteria for this honor should be the first recipient of the award and was presented to:
Paramedic Dawn Titmus
Wounded in Action: 02.22.2024
We pray no one will ever have to receive this Wounded In Action award, but for those who have earned it, the ribbon, certificate, and handshake is the very least of what we can do to thank them for what they have sacrificed. The Wounded In Action Medal is awarded to a member of the department for wounds received in the line of duty while observing all reasonable safety procedures, that require transportation to a medical facility, and subsequent treatment for substantial injury.
Firefighter Michael Musatow and his crew were conducting a transitional fire attack on a house fire in the 9000 block of Boydton Plank Road. They knocked the bulk of the fire down in the living area and were attempting to push down the hallway when they were notified by the Incident Commander that the room had flared up behind them. Firefighter Musatow and his accompanying partner fought their way out of the house. Firefighter Musatow suffered severe burns and spent weeks at the burn center at VCU Medical Center. He returned to work on light duty as soon as possible and has since returned to modified duty in operations. Every day firefighter Musatow comes to work with a smile on his face and motivation to do whatever he can to get back to full duty. For burn injuries received and willingness and ability to assess and accept reasonable risk in the face of imminent personal danger a Wounded in Action Medal was awarded to:
Firefighter Michael Musatow
Commendation Medal: 05.31.2024
Units were dispatched to a multi-vehicle accident on I-85, involving five vehicles. Three off-duty career personnel responded to an All-Call for a major, motor vehicle accident. Paramedic Parker Finch came upon the accident on his way home and left his vehicle abandoned on the side of the interstate to provide patient care and assist with transporting the patients to the landing zone for helicopter transport. FF Josh Stout responded to Company 3 to set up a landing zone for two helicopters. Captain Ryan Crutchfield responded to Company 3 to staff Engine 24, which served a critical role in this incident and allowed him to provide care to several patients. A Commendation was awarded to:
Firefighter Josh Stout
Captain Ryan Crutchfield
Paramedic Parker Finch
Commendation Medal: 10.04.2024
Units were dispatched to the 13000 block of Halifax Road for a utility room fire. Lieutenant Tyler Murray, with Company 4, was nearby and responded in his personal vehicle. Upon arrival, he quickly confirmed that all occupants had safely exited the residence and proceeded to assess the situation further. LT Murray made crucial decisions, implementing flow path control. His swift and brave action significantly impacted the outcome of the incident, helping to contain the fire and prevent further damage to the home. A Commendation was awarded to:
Lieutenant Tyler Murray
Unit Citation - Company 1, Company 2, Company 4, Engine 1, Truck 4, and Medic 42: 04.09.2024
Company 1 and Company 4 along with career personnel assigned to these stations were dispatched to a call for a patient trapped under a tractor-trailer. The call was upgraded to an industrial accident with a confirmed entrapment. Due to the nature of the call, the Crater Regional Technical Rescue Team was activated. The patient had been trapped for around an hour. Patient care was started by personnel on Medic 42. Truck 4 and Engine 1 arrived on the scene and crews worked along with additional volunteer manpower from Company 1, 2, and 4 to free the patient. The patient was transported by helicopter and later released from the hospital. For effective teamwork Unit Citations were awarded to:
Captain Ryan Crutchfield
Paramedic Holly Johnson
Firefighter Alvin Critzer
Captain Austin Walker
Retired Firefighter Johnny Moretz
Lieutenant Tristan Florin
Lieutenant Lonnie Antich
Paramedic Heather Deadmon

Unit Citation - Medic 32: 10.02.2024
Medic 32 was dispatched to a water rescue at the Nottoway River following Hurricane Helene where a vehicle had driven through high water on Cherry Hill Road. River levels were unpredictable at the time from severe storms upriver and additional units were too far away to wait. FF Bajana selflessly pulled the distraught patient from the car while Firefighter Mabe served as a spotter. Unit Citations were awarded to:
Firefighter Juan Bajana
Firefighter Eric Mabe
Unit Citation - Medic 22 and Company 2: 05.10.2024
Company 2 and Medic 22 were dispatched to a single vehicle that overturned in the 10000 block of Baltimore Rd. Medic 22 arrived on the scene to find a single vehicle that had made a heavy impact with a large tree. The driver was out of the vehicle, but the passenger was unconscious and trapped in the vehicle. Engine 2 arrived on the scene minutes after Medic 22 and began extrication on one patient. Command requested a helicopter due to the patient’s injuries, but two helicopters declined to fly due to weather. Medic 22 transported the patient by ground who was later released from the hospital. All personnel involved in this incident worked fluently together for the best outcome for the patients involved. Unit Citations were awarded to:
Battalion Chief Mark Rowland
Lieutenant. Tommy Long
Firefighter Eric Mabe
Lieutenant Lonnie Antich
Chief Brett Jennings
Lieutenant Chelsea Eirich
